Driving on Chol Hamoed

Car/Driving on Chol Hamoed:[1]

It is permitted to drive on Chol Hamoed whether it is for the need of the Moed or simply for the sake of a trip or outing.[2] [If however it is not for the need of the Moed and is not for the sake of a trip or outing, some Poskim[3] forbid doing so.[4] Others[5] rule it is permitted to drive for even no need at all.[6]]

May one take driving lessons on Chol Hamoed?
Some Poskim[7] rule it is permitted to do so long as one did not schedule the lessons purposely for Chol Hamoed.[8] Other Poskim[9] forbid doing so.

[3] Rav Moshe Feinstein brought in Chol Hamoed Kehilchaso 7 footnote 163; Piskeiy Teshuvos 536/2; See Beir Moshe 7/13

[4] The reason: As although the Rama ibid rules that even riding for no purpose is permitted, nevertheless that is because riding an animal does not involve any Melacha. [Beis Yosef brought in M”B 536/4] However driving involves Melachos, such as igniting a fire and Makeh Bepatish, and hence it would only be permitted if it is for the need of the Moed, as is the law by all Melachos that are Maaseh Hedyot. [ibid; See Biur Halacha 536 “Umutar Lirkov”]

[6] The reason: As Havarah/fire is permitted on Chol Hamoed even for no need, as it is merely Rabbinical on Yom Tov and does not involve any time to perform. [Beir Moshe ibid; Chol Hamoed Kehilchaso ibid]

[8] See Michaber ibid “so long as it was not scheduled for the Moed.”

[9] See Beir Moshe ibid; Chol Hamoed Kehilchaso 7/71 that this is dependent on the dispute if whether driving is allowed when it is not for the need of the Moed.
