Hilchos Shabbos Table Learning
A Weekly Guide to Shabbos Laws for Personal Study and Family Discussion
Β
β¨This weeks Topicβ¨
π· Preparing the Kiddush Cup β Kos Shel Bracha
Using a cup for Kiddush and other mitzvos is not just about the wine β the cup itself must be prepared properly and respectfully.
π Rinsing the Kos Shel Bracha
The cup used for Kos Shel Bracha β such as for:
β’ Kiddush
β’ Havdala
β’ Birchas Hamazon
β’ Chuppah
β’ Bris Milah
β requires proper preparation before use.
πΉ Hadacha & Shetifa
- Hadacha β washing the inside of the cup
β’ Shetifa β washing the outside of the cup
β
From the letter of the law:
Both should be done to ensure the cup is clean and presentable.
𧽠Cleaning with a Cloth
β Is water required?
Not necessarily.
β
An alternative method:
β’ Thoroughly wipe the cup with a cloth or napkin
β’ Ensure it appears clean and dignified both inside and outside
β οΈ According to Kabbalah:
The cup should specifically be rinsed with water.
π―οΈ In a time of need:
If water is unavailable, wiping with a napkin suffices.
π Chassidic practice:
The Rebbe was observed wiping his Kiddush cup with a napkin before Kiddush during Shabbos farbrengens.
β¨ If the Cup Is Already Clean
If the cup is:
β’ Clean inside and outside
β’ Contains no food remnants
β It does not require further rinsing or wiping.
β οΈ According to Kabbalah:
Even a clean cup should still receive Hadacha and Shetifa with water.
π· If the Cup Contains Leftover Wine
If the cup looks clean but contains leftover wine:
β
From the letter of the law:
β’ No rinsing is required unless the wine contains food crumbs
β’ For example: wine that bread or other food was dipped into
β¨ Additional opinions:
β’ Some Poskim recommend rinsing even if no crumbs are present
β’ According to Kabbalah, rinsing is required in all cases
π Reusing the Cup During the Same Meal
π Example: Pesach Seder
β
If the cup was rinsed before Kiddush and remained clean:
β’ It does not need to be rinsed again for the second Kos
β Before using the cup for Birchas Hamazon:
β’ One must ensure there is no leftover wine containing food
β’ If there is β the cup must be rinsed or wiped clean
π―οΈ Chassidic practice:
β’ The Rebbe did not rinse the cup for the second Kos at the Seder
β’ However, he did rinse the cup before Birchas Hamazon
β’ This was because the cup had become visibly dirty (e.g., from charoses)
β Summary
- A Kos Shel Bracha should be clean inside and outside
β’ Cleaning may be done with water or by wiping with a cloth
β’ If the cup is already clean, no further cleaning is required
β’ Leftover wine alone does not invalidate the cup
β’ Wine containing food remnants does require cleaning
β¨ According to Kabbalah:
The cup should always be rinsed with water before use, even if clean.
β Q & A
π· If multiple people make Kiddush using the same cup, must it be rinsed between each person?
β
From the letter of the law:
No β it is not required.
β¨ Some opinions:
β’ It is proper to rinse, since the cup contains another personβs leftovers
β’ Others say this is only necessary for one who is particular about this
π―οΈ Chabad Custom:
β’ There is no fixed custom
β’ Many do not rinse between people
β’ Some Chassidim are careful to do so
