Must one take Maaser from presents that he received?[1]

One is required to take Maaser off presents or donations that he receives.[2] [From the letter of the law, this applies even to non-cash gifts [i.e. a silver Kiddush cup; a cell phone; a painting; etc].[3] However, the custom is to only take Maaser off from cash gifts.[4]]
