Tevilat Keilim While Wearing a Glove
Question:
It is very cold outside, and I would like to know if it is permitted to immerse (toivel) utensils in the mikvah while wearing a glove. Is this allowed?
Answer:
Yes, there is no issue with immersing utensils while wearing a glove. However, one must ensure that the glove is first wetted before immersing the utensil, so that the water can properly reach all areas of the vessel.
Explanation:
Although a glove can constitute a chatzitzah (interposition), this concern applies only when a person is immersing his own body, such as by Tevilas Nashim. In contrast, when immersing utensils, the glove worn on the person’s hand is not considered a chatzitzah for the vessel being immersed, no more than one’s own fingers would be. Nevertheless, just as one is required to wet his hands before immersing a utensil in order to ensure that the water reaches every part of the vessel without obstruction, so too one should wet the glove beforehand for the same reason.
As for the notion that tevilat keilim must be performed directly with one’s bare hands, this is incorrect. The halacha is that tevilat keilim does not require kavanah (intent) at all. Even if a utensil were to fall into the mikvah on its own, or be pushed in by an external force, it would still be validly immersed. For this reason, it is permitted for a non‑Jew or a child to immerse utensils, provided a Jew supervises and knows that the immersion was done properly. Accordingly, wearing a glove poses no problem whatsoever, so long as care is taken that water reaches all parts of the utensil, as explained above.
