📖 Daily Rambam (1) Tefilah and Birkat Kohanim – Chapter 10: Errors in Prayer, Repetition of the Amidah, and Correcting Mistakes (Wednesday 28th Nissan)

Halachah 1 — Errors in Concentration and in the Blessings

One who prayed without proper concentration (kavanah) must repeat the prayer, unless he had proper kavanah in the first blessing, in which case repetition is unnecessary.

If one errs:

  • in the first three blessings, he must return to the beginning of the Amidah;
  • in the last three blessings, he returns to R’tzey;
  • in a middle blessing, he returns to the beginning of that blessing and continues properly.

The same rules apply to a chazan praying aloud.

Halachah 2 — A Chazan’s Mistake in Silent Prayer

If the chazan errs during the silent Amidah, he should not repeat it to avoid burdening the congregation.
Instead, he relies on the repetition of the Amidah to discharge his obligation.

This leniency does not apply if he errs in the first three blessings, in which case he must repeat the silent Amidah like any individual.

Halachah 3 — Replacing a Confused Chazan

If a chazan becomes confused during the repetition and cannot continue:

  • another person should immediately replace him.
  • If the error occurs in the blessing against heretics, the replacement is immediate unless the blessing was already begun.

The replacement should not refuse to take over.

Halachah 4 — Where the Replacement Begins

If the error was:

  • in a middle blessing → the replacement begins at that blessing;
  • in the first three → the replacement begins at the start of the Amidah;
  • in the last three → the replacement begins at R’tzey.

Halachah 5 — Improper Refusal to Serve as Chazan

A person who refuses to serve as chazan due to:

  • wearing colored clothing, or
  • wearing sandals,

is disqualified from serving even when those conditions are no longer present, since such refusal reflects improper motivation.

Halachah 6 — Uncertainty Whether One Prayed

One who is uncertain whether he prayed should not repeat the Amidah, unless he explicitly intends the second prayer as voluntary.

If one realizes mid‑Amidah that he already prayed:

  • he must stop immediately.

This does not apply to Ma’ariv, since it is not obligatory by Torah law.

Halachah 7 — Weekday Prayer on Shabbat or Festivals

If one mistakenly recited a weekday Amidah on Shabbat or Yom Tov:

  • he does not fulfill his obligation.

If he remembers during the Amidah, he completes the current blessing and switches to the proper Shabbat text.
In Musaf, however, he must stop immediately.

If one mistakenly prayed a weekday Amidah intending it as Musaf, he must repeat Musaf.

Halachah 8 — Errors About Rain and Dew

During the rainy season:

  • omitting Morid HaGeshem or Morid HaTal → repeat the Amidah.
  • mentioning dew suffices.

In the summer:

  • mistakenly saying Morid HaGeshem → repeat.
  • omitting dew → no repetition required, since dew never ceases.

Halachah 9 — Forgetting to Request Rain

If one forgets to request rain:

  • before Shome’a Tefilah → insert it there;
  • after Shome’a Tefilah → return to Barech Aleinu;
  • after completing the Amidah → repeat the entire prayer.

Halachah 10 — Forgetting Ya’aleh V’Yavo

If one omits Ya’aleh V’Yavo:

  • before finishing the Amidah → return to R’tzey;
  • after finishing → repeat the Amidah.

If still before stepping back, he may return to R’tzey.

Halachah 11 — When Repetition Is Not Required

On:

  • Chol HaMoed,
  • Morning or Minchah of Rosh Chodesh,

repetition rules apply as above.

In Ma’ariv of Rosh Chodesh, omission of Ya’aleh V’Yavo does not require repetition.

Halachah 12 — Chazan and Rosh Chodesh

Whenever an individual must repeat the prayer for an error, so must the chazan—
except on Morning Rosh Chodesh, where repetition is waived due to congregational burden, since Musaf will yet be prayed.

Halachah 13 — Ten Days of Repentance

During the Ten Days of Repentance:

  • concluding HaEl HaKadosh instead of HaMelech HaKadosh requires restarting the Amidah.
  • error in HaMelech HaMishpat requires repetition only of that blessing if caught early; otherwise the entire Amidah is repeated.

These rules apply equally to the chazan.

Halachah 14 — Omissions That Do Not Require Repetition

Failure to mention:

  • Havdalah in the Amidah,
  • Al HaNissim (Chanukah, Purim),
  • Anenu on fast days,

does not require repetition.

If one remembers Anenu before stepping back, he may add a short concluding supplication.

Halachah 15 — Tashlumin on Shabbat and Festivals

If one missed Minchah before Shabbat or Yom Tov, he prays Ma’ariv twice.

Rules of Havdalah:

  • said in the first Amidah only.
  • If omitted in both, still valid.
  • If said only in the second, a third Amidah is required.

One must pause between consecutive prayers to settle the mind.

Halachah 16 — Joining the Congregation Mid‑Prayer

One may not pray ahead of the congregation.

If entering while the congregation prays:

  • If he can finish before Kedushah → pray silently.
  • If not → pray together with the chazan until Kedushah, then continue alone.

One already within the Amidah may not interrupt to answer Kedushah, Kaddish, or Amen.
