9. Muktzah Machmas Mitzvah:

Muktzah Machmas Mitzvah refers to a category of Muktzah in which its items have been set aside from being used by Bein Hashmashos due to their designation for a Mitzvah use.  The following are case examples of the application of this form of Muktzah.

A. May one use a Yom Tov candle for other purposes?[1]

If the candle was lit prior to the start of Yom Tov then it is forbidden to use the wax or oil of the candle for other purposes, such as to eat it, even after it has extinguished[2].

The reason for this is because: As the candle has been designated for its Mitzvah at the time of Bein Hashmashos, and since by Bein Hashmashos it was forbidden for one to use the oil for eating being that this is belittling to the Mitzvah, therefore it remains forbidden throughout the entire Yom Tov.

The details of the above law: However one may relight it to use for its light after it has extinguished[3]. However if it was lit only after the entrance of Yom Tov, then it is permitted to be used after it has extinguished for any purpose[4]. Likewise the above prohibition only applies to the candles which were blessed on for the Mitzvah, however other candles lit are permitted to be used for other purposes even if they were lit from before Yom Tov.
