10. Summary of the Muktzah categories:[1]

Three categories of Muktzah by items which are vessels: [In conclusion of the above] we find that we have learned that there are three different categories of Muktzah by [items which have the status of] vessels. Two [of these categories] are permitted to be moved and the third is forbidden to move.

[These are:] 1) [An item which is] set aside due to its repulsiveness [such as the earthenware lamp brought in Halacha 8] and 2) [an item which is] set aside from being used for any other use [such as items which one has set aside to sell but is not particular against using, as explained in Halacha 3] are permitted [to move]. 3) [An item] which is set aside due to chance of loss of worth [if it were to be used for other purposes, I.e. “Muktzah Machamas Chisaron Kis“] is forbidden [to move].

A fourth category of Muktzah: There is a fourth category of Muktzah, and this is an item which was Muktzah by Bein Hashmashos [twilight-between sunset and night] due to its being designated for a purpose that is forbidden to be done on Shabbos, and on Shabbos this prohibited [purpose for which it was designated for] no longer became relevant[2]. [Regarding the law of moving this item] there are circumstances for which we are lenient and [there are circumstances for which we are] strict. This was explained in Halacha 3.

Another category of Muktzah-Muktzah Machmas Mitzvah[3]: There is another category of Muktzah amongst food and drinks, which apply on Shabbos and Yom Tov which is [called] Muktzah Machmas Mitzvah, and will be explained in chapter 638 and chapter 514 [Halacha 24].

A summary of all the Muktzah categories which are forbidden[4]: In conclusion of the above we have found that the amount of categories of Muktzah which are forbidden [to move] are five in total. [These are:] 1) Muktzah Machmas Chisaron Kis, 2) Muktzah Machmas Gufo, 3) Muktzah due to a prohibition to benefit [from the item] or to eat [the item, when it is designated for humans to eat], 4) Muktzah Machmas Mitzvah and 5) Muktzah due to it having been forbidden [to do work with it] by Bein Hashmashos.

Summary-The following are the Muktzah categories:

1) Muktzah Machmas Mius: An item which is set aside due to its repulsiveness is permitted to move [for its place or use].

2) An item which is set aside from being used for any other use [such as items which one has set aside to sell but is not particular against using, is permitted to move.

3) Muktzah Machamas Chisaron Kis: An item which is set aside due to chance of loss of worth is forbidden to move.

4) An item which was Muktzah by Bein Hashmashos due to its being designated for a purpose that is forbidden to be done on Shabbos, and on Shabbos this prohibited purpose for which it was designated for no longer became relevant[5]. [Regarding the law of moving this item] there are circumstances for which we are lenient and [there are circumstances for which we are] strict.

5) Muktzah Machmas Mitzvah:

6) Muktzah Machmas Gufo:

7) Muktzah due to a prohibition to benefit [from the item] or to eat [the item, when it is designated for humans to eat].

Q&A

Are the limitations on Machmas Issur/Heter considered a true category of Muktzah, and are there any other categories?

See Peri Megadim (beginning of 308) who brings Beis Yosef who splits the categories into 6 and includes machmas issur, basis, machmas mitzvah, and Muktzah by bein hashmoshos. Admur [308/7] mentions 3-4 different categories of items that are Muktzah. Machmas issur/heter isn’t mentioned while Mius and Muktzah M’lihishtamesh Bo are. Possibly one can answer, that the law of Machmas issur isn’t a law of Muktzah but rather a decree that one may come to use it on Shabbos. However, see K’tzos Hashulchan (108/1) that machmas issur is mentioned as one of the categories.

Under which Muktzah category do inedible foods fall under?

In 308/10 inedible foods are listed as MM”G however in 308/10 it is listed as a separate category. As well in the Ketzos Hashulchan the laws of inedible foods and MM”G are each given a separate chapter. וצ”ע
