Chapter 4: The Shield and the Sun: A Divine Analogy
12th Sivan
1. The Shield as a Protector
- The Divine analogy compares the sun’s shield to the Name Elokim, which conceals the Name Havayah. Just as the sun’s shield allows creatures to benefit from its rays without being harmed, so too, the Name Elokim ensures that the created universe can absorb Divine illumination.
2. The Continuous Divine Flow
- The Name Havayah signifies the constant act of creation, bringing existence into being at every moment.
- This ongoing process is necessary, as the initial act of creation during the Six Days is insufficient for sustained existence. The Divine energy flows continuously, forming the life-force of all creation.
3. The Attribute of Chesed
- The term Hagadol, meaning “the Great,” represents G-d’s unlimited kindness, spreading life-force to all worlds and creatures.
- This infinite benevolence derives from G-d’s greatness and is universal, sustaining all beings regardless of merit.
4. The Infinite Nature of Divine Kindness
- G-d’s greatness is unsearchable, and His kindness knows no limits.
- As the nature of the benevolent is to do good, the infinite Divine essence ensures the ongoing creation and existence of countless worlds and creatures, embodying the ultimate form of generosity.
