Q1: Why does the Torah say “הַבָּאִים מִצְרַיְמָה” (coming to Egypt) in present tense? (Rashi)

Because at the time of the narrative, they were in the process of coming, so it uses present tense rather than past.

Q2: Who is “Sha’ul son of the Canaanite woman”? (Rashi)

He was the son of Dinah, who had been violated by Shechem. Dinah refused to leave until Shimon swore to marry her.

Q3: Why does the verse attribute the males to Leah and the female (Dinah) to Yaakov? (Rashi)

To teach that when the wife emits seed first, she bears a male; when the husband emits seed first, she bears a female.

Q4: The Torah says Leah’s descendants were 33, but only 32 are listed. How does Rashi explain this?

The missing one is Yocheved, born within the walls of Egypt after they entered the city.

Q5: Why does the Torah say “Rachel, Jacob’s wife,” but not for the other wives? (Rashi)

Because Rachel was the main wife of the household.

Q6: How does Rashi explain the total of 66 versus 70 people?

66 left Canaan; Yosef and his two sons were already in Egypt, and Yocheved was born upon entry, making 70.

Q7: What does Rashi say about the verb “הַבָּאָה” in “All the people who were coming”?

It is present tense, accented on the last syllable, because they were still on the way. Later, “who came” is past tense, accented on the first syllable.

Q8: Why does the Torah call Esav’s family “נַפְשׁוֹת” (plural) and Yaakov’s family “נֶפֶשׁ” (singular)? (Rashi)

Esav’s family served many gods, while Yaakov’s family served one G‑d.
