6. Saving a Bracha Levatala:

In this Halacha we will discuss what one is to do in the event that he already recited a blessing in vain and if there’s anything that can be done to lessen the severity of the prohibition after the fact.

Finished blessing – Saying Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuso Leolam Vaed:[1] If one said a blessing in vain, then he is to recite immediately afterwards the words “Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuso Leolam Vaed.”

Before Elokeinu – Saying Lamdayni Chukecha:[2] If one began saying a blessing in vain and remembered after saying G-d’s name of “Ado-noy”, prior to saying the word Elokeinu in the blessing, then he should say the words “Lamdayni Chukecha”, and in this way it appears as if he is reciting a verse of Scripture[3] and it is not considered a blessing in vain.

After Elokeinu – Saying Vayomer Yisrael Avinu Meolam Vead Olam:[4] If one began saying a blessing in vain and remembered after saying the letters “Elokei” in G-d’s name of “Elokeinu”, but before concluding His name with “Nu”, then he should say “Vayomer Yisrael Avinu Meolam Vead Olam.”[5] Nevertheless, he should conclude afterwards with the words “Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuso Leolam Vaed.”
