It is customary to honor a number of people to hold the child until the child is rested on the chair of Eliyahu Hanavi. These individuals are known as the Chaiyka or Hagasha. This is done in order to honor as many people as possible in participating in the mitzvah. [Some Poskim[2], however, write that this should only be done if each subsequent person holding the baby brings the baby closer to the chair of Eliyahu, and it should not be done in a way that the baby is simply passed around the room.]
