Chapter 10: The Departure of the Divine Glory
1. The Throne Above the Cherubim
Yechezkel sees on the expanse above the cherubim something like a sapphire stone, resembling a throne.
2. Command to Scatter Fire
G‑d instructs the man clothed in linen:
“Enter between the wheels under the cherubim, take fiery coals, and scatter them upon the city.”
The man obeys, as Yechezkel watches.
- The Glory Fills the House
- The cherubim stand at the right side of the House.
- A cloud fills the inner court, and the Glory of G‑d moves from the cherub to the threshold.
- The House and court are filled with divine radiance.
- The sound of the cherubim’s wings is heard like the voice of G‑d Almighty.
- The Wheels and Their Mystery
- Four wheels appear beside the cherubim, shining like crystal.
- Each wheel is like a wheel within a wheel, moving in all directions without turning.
- Their rims, wings, and bodies are full of eyes and colors.
- Yechezkel hears them called “galgal”.
- Each cherub has four faces: cherub, man, lion, and eagle.
- The Glory Departs
- The Glory of G‑d leaves the threshold and rests upon the cherubim.
- The cherubim lift their wings and rise from the earth, accompanied by the wheels, and stop at the eastern gate of the House of G‑d.
- Yechezkel recognizes them as the same living beings he saw by the River Chebar.
- Description of the Living Beings
- Each cherub has four faces and four wings, with human-like hands beneath their wings.
- Their faces match those seen earlier by the River Chebar.
- Each moves straight forward, in the direction of its face.
