Daily Tanach – Hoshea Chapter 1: A Living Sign of Hashem’s Case Against Yisra’el
- Historical Setting (v. 1)
The word of Hashem comes to Hoshea ben Be’eri during the reigns of Uzziyyah, Yotam, Achaz, and Chizqiyahu, kings of Yehudah, and during the reign of Yarov‘am ben Yo’ash, king of Yisra’el.
- Hashem’s Command to Hoshea (v. 2)
Hashem commands Hoshea to take a wife of unfaithfulness, using the prophet’s marriage as a symbol of the land’s unfaithfulness in turning away from Hashem.
- Hoshea’s Marriage (v. 3)
Hoshea marries Gomer bat Divlayim, and she conceives and bears him children through whom Hashem communicates His message.
- The Children as Prophetic Signs (vv. 4–9)
- Yizre‘el (vv. 4–5)
A son whose name announces judgment on the house of Yehu and the coming end of the kingdom of Yisra’el, connected with bloodshed in the Valley of Yizre‘el. - Lo‑Ruchamah (vv. 6–7)
A daughter whose name means “Not Shown Compassion,” declaring that Hashem will no longer show mercy to the house of Yisra’el, though He will still show compassion and deliver Yehudah by His own power. - Lo‑‘Ammi (vv. 8–9)
A son whose name means “Not My People,” signifying a broken covenant relationship between Hashem and Yisra’el.
