👕 Hanging Clothing to Dry on Shabbos

📜 The Law

  1. Hanging Wet Clothing to Dry on Shabbos

It is forbidden to hang clothing to dry on Shabbos.

📌 Reason (Maaras Ayin):
The Sages decreed against hanging wet clothing to dry, lest:

  • People think it is permitted to launder clothing on Shabbos, or
  • People assume the clothing was washed on Shabbos itself, which is a Biblical prohibition.

  1. Private Rooms & Visibility

Is it permitted to hang clothing in a private room where no one will see it?

No.
Even if the clothing is hung in a bedroom, bathroom, or other private area, it remains forbidden if the garment is wet.

  1. Clothing Wet from Perspiration

Does the prohibition apply if the clothing became wet only from sweat?

Yes.
Even if the clothing is not wet from water but only from perspiration, it is still forbidden to hang it to dry on Shabbos.

Q&A – Common Practical Cases

🧺 If the Clothing Was Already Hanging Before Shabbos

If one hung clothing to dry before Shabbos, must they be removed when Shabbos begins?

No.
If the clothing was already hanging before Shabbos, one is not required to remove it, even though others may see it. The concern of Maaras Ayin does not apply retroactively.

🌬️ Dry Clothing

May one hang dry clothing on Shabbos?

According to most Poskim, yes.
The decree was made only against wet clothing, not dry clothing.

⚠️ Note:
A minority of Poskim are stringent even with dry clothing, but this is not the accepted ruling.

📌 Practical ruling:
One may be lenient and hang dry clothing.

🪝 Hanging on a Hook vs. Drying

Is hanging clothing on a hook included in the prohibition?

Permitted, according to the Alter Rebbe.

📖 Reason:
From the wording of the Poskim, it is clear that the prohibition applies only to:

  • Spreading out clothing, or
  • Hanging it in a manner of laundering and drying.

Merely hanging an item on a hook is not considered drying.

Also Permitted: Hanging in Its Normal Place

If the clothing is hung in a place where it is usually stored (not for drying), it is permitted.

📌 Examples:

  • Hanging a jacket on its regular hook
  • Placing a hat or scarf on its usual peg
  • Hanging a towel on its normal hook if it is already dry

In all these cases, it does not resemble laundering and is thus allowed.

📝 Practical Summary

  • ❌ Wet clothing: Forbidden to hang to dry
    • 🚿 Perspiration‑wet clothing: Also forbidden
    • 🔒 Private room: Still forbidden
    • ✅ Hung before Shabbos: No need to remove
    • 👕 Dry clothing: Permitted (according to most Poskim)
    • 🪝 Hanging on a hook (not for drying): Permitted
    • 🧥 Hanging garments in their usual place: Permitted

🧭 Bottom Line

The prohibition of hanging clothing on Shabbos is rooted in Maaras Ayin and applies strictly to wet garments hung for drying.
However, dry clothing, normal storage, and non‑drying hanging are permitted, reflecting the careful balance Chazal maintained between safeguarding Shabbos and everyday living.
