How to Perform Biur Chametz When No Fire Is Available

Question:
I would like to know how I can perform biur chametz if there is no open flame available. In our neighborhood, lighting fires is not permitted, and it is illegal to make a fire on one’s private property. Additionally, what do people do in situations such as a rainy day, when it is not possible to light a fire outdoors at all? Is there any advice on how to properly fulfill the mitzvah under these circumstances?

Answer:
A valid alternative method for fulfilling the mitzvah of biur chametz is as follows: take a k’zayit‑sized piece of chametz, such as a slice of bread, and place it in a toaster oven. Toast it until it becomes completely blackened and charred, similar to charcoal. At that point, the chametz is considered destroyed, and the mitzvah of biur chametz has been fulfilled. As for the remaining ten pieces of bread used for bedikat chametz that cannot be placed into the toaster oven, they may be discarded by placing them in the trash and disposing of them in a public area, in accordance with local regulations.
