Is it possible to stop oneself from having lusts for worldly matters:[1]
Although one’s though speech and action is in every person full control of what to do, say and think, one’s feelings are not. It is not possible for a person to completely and truly eradicate lusts for worldly matters. This is only in the power of a Tzaddik, who was created specially by G-d with this ability. It is only truly possible to eradicate lusts for evil or even permitted pleasures if one merits to have an intense experience of love for G-d called Ahavas Betaanugim, which is an experience similar to Olam Haba. Only tsaddikim merit this love, and hence only a Tzaddik can truly eradicate his love for worldly pleasures and actually despise them. This is why Iyov stated “You created Tzaddikim.”
