Measure for Measure
Sotah 6 explains why the Sotah ritual is structured as it is.
The Gemara applies the Torah’s principle of measure for measure:
- She acted secretly → she is examined publicly
- She used beauty improperly → her appearance is diminished
- She blurred truth → truth is forcibly clarified
The ritual mirrors behavior to restore moral clarity.
Unlike most offerings, the Sotah brings a barley offering:
- Barley is animal food
- This symbolizes behavior driven by instinct rather than reason
The offering is deliberately humble and unadorned.
Public exposure is not humiliation for its own sake:
- It serves as deterrence
- And as a societal statement about trust and boundaries
The Torah is protecting marital integrity, not assigning shame.
Theme: Justice educates as much as it judges.
