Chapter 9: Mourning for a Nation’s Forsaken Path
(25 Pesukim)
1. The Cry for Solitude (9:1-2)
- Yirmiyahu wishes for a refuge in the desert to escape the company of his people.
- He describes the people as adulterers and traitors filled with deceit and treachery.
- They have strayed from truth, moving from evil to evil, and do not know Hashem.
2. A Nation Consumed by Deceit (9:3-8)
- People can no longer trust neighbors and brothers, as they spread lies and slander.
- Their tongues are described as deadly arrows, speaking deceit while harboring malicious intent.
- Hashem announces a plan to refine and test the people due to their wickedness.
3. Lament for the Land (9:9-10)
- Yirmiyahu grieves for the ruined mountains and desolate wilderness.
- Both animals and humans have fled, leaving the land barren and uninhabitable.
- Jerusalem is foretold to become a ruin, with Judah left in desolation.
4. Reasons for Divine Judgment (9:11-15)
- The Question of Wisdom – Why Is the Land Destroyed? Yirmiyahu asks who is truly wise enough to understand why the land has become desolate and lifeless, like an untraveled wilderness.
- God’s Answer – Abandonment of His Torah: Hashem replies that the destruction comes because the people have abandoned the Torah He set before them. They refused to listen to His voice or walk according to His commandments.
- Idolatry: The people have forsaken Hashem’s Law, following the corrupt desires of their hearts and idol worship.
- Feeding them Poison: Hashem declares He will feed them with wormwood and give them poisonous water to drink.
- They will be scattered among unfamiliar nations, pursued by the sword until destruction.
5. A Call to Mourning (9:16-19)
- Hashem commands the hiring of professional mourners to lament the nation’s downfall.
- The sound of wailing from Zion reflects the shame and ruin of the people.
- Women are instructed to teach laments to their daughters and neighbors. “Indeed hear, O women, the word of Hashem, and let your ear receive the word of His mouth; teach your daughters a lamentation, and each to her neighbor a kina.”
6. The Consequences of Sin (9:20-21)
- Death is described as entering through windows and cutting off lives from the streets and squares.
- Yirmiyahu proclaims that human carcasses will scatter the fields like discarded sheaves.
- Don’t boast of wealth and wisdom: “Hashem says: A wise person shouldn’t take pride in their wisdom, a strong person shouldn’t boast about their strength, and a wealthy person shouldn’t glory in their riches. If someone wants to feel proud, let it be for this: that they truly understand and know Me — that I am Hashem, who brings kindness, justice, and righteousness into the world. These are the qualities I value and delight in, says Hashem.”
- The Days of Accountability: “The time is coming, says Hashem, when I will call every nation to account — even those who are physically circumcised but spiritually uncircumcised. Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab, and all the distant desert peoples — all these nations remain uncircumcised, and the entire house of Israel has an uncircumcised heart.”
