Daily Tanach – Yechezkel Chapter 39: The Defeat of Gog and the Final Vindication of Israel (Thursday, 2nd Adar)

Chapter 39: The Defeat of Gog and the Final Vindication of Israel

  1. Gog’s Downfall on the Mountains of Israel (Verses 1–5)

Hashem commands Yechezkel to prophesy once more against Gog, the leader of Meshech and Tubal. Hashem declares that He is against Gog and will draw him out from the far north, leading him toward the mountains of Israel.
There Hashem will strike him down—his weapons will fall from his hands, and he and all his vast armies will perish. Their corpses will be food for birds of prey and wild animals. Hashem states firmly: “For I have spoken.”

  1. Fire on Magog and Distant Nations (Verses 6–8)

Hashem will send fire upon the land of Magog and upon distant, complacent islands. Through this act, all nations will know that Hashem is the Lord. His Holy Name will no longer be profaned; instead, the nations will realize that Hashem is sanctified in Israel.
The day of Gog’s defeat is certain—“Behold, it is coming… this is the day of which I have spoken.”

  1. Seven Years of Burning Weapons (Verses 9–10)

After Gog’s destruction, the people of Israel will collect the invaders’ weapons and use them as fuel for seven years. They will need to cut no firewood, for the vast quantity of discarded weapons will supply their needs.
In this reversal of fortunes, Israel will plunder those who once plundered them.

  1. The Burial of Gog: Hamon‑Gog (Verses 11–16)

Gog will be buried in a valley east of the sea, which will become known as “The Valley of Hamon‑Gog” (“the masses of Gog”).
The burial will take seven months, as the entire nation participates in cleansing the land.
Men will be appointed to continually search for bones, marking them so they can be buried in Hamon‑Gog. Even a nearby city will be renamed Hamonah.
Through this process, the land will be purified.

  1. The Feast for the Birds and Beasts (Verses 17–20)

Hashem instructs Yechezkel to call all birds and animals to gather for a divine “feast”—a symbolic scene of judgment.
They will consume the flesh of mighty warriors, princes, and soldiers—like rams, lambs, and bulls—until they are gorged and drunk.
This graphic image demonstrates the total collapse of Gog’s armies and Hashem’s decisive victory.

  1. Hashem Reveals His Glory to the Nations (Verses 21–23)

Hashem declares that through His judgment upon Gog, all nations will see His power.
Israel too will recognize Hashem from that day forward.
The nations will understand that Israel’s earlier exile occurred because of their sins—because they betrayed Hashem and He hid His face from them.

  1. Israel’s Restoration and Hashem’s Everlasting Presence (Verses 24–29)

Hashem promises to restore the captivity of Yaakov and to have compassion on Israel.
Though Israel will remember their disgrace and past unfaithfulness, they will live securely on their land, free from fear.
Hashem will gather them from all nations, leaving none behind.
Finally, Hashem declares:
“I will no longer hide My face from them, for I will have poured out My spirit upon the House of Israel.”
