Chapter 21: The Sword of Judgment
- Prophecy of Fire and Sword (Verses 1–7)
G‑d commands Yechezkel to set his face southward and prophesy against the forest of the south. A consuming fire will burn every green and dry tree, and all flesh will see that G‑d Himself has kindled it. Then Yechezkel is told to turn toward Jerusalem and prophesy against the sanctuaries and the land of Israel: G‑d will draw His sword from its sheath to cut off both righteous and wicked. Yechezkel must sigh bitterly before the people, for news of coming destruction will melt every heart and weaken every hand.
- The Sword Sharpened and Polished (Verses 8–17)
G‑d declares that the sword is sharpened and polished for slaughter, glittering in readiness for the slayer’s hand. Yechezkel is commanded to cry and wail, for the sword will strike the princes of Israel and the people. He is told to clap his hands as a sign of the great slaughter that is coming, for G‑d’s fury will be satisfied.
- Two Roads for Babylon’s Sword (Verses 18–24)
Yechezkel is instructed to mark two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon—one leading to Rabbah of Ammon and the other to Jerusalem. The king of Babylon will stand at the crossroads and use divination—casting arrows, consulting idols, and examining the liver. The decision will favor Jerusalem, where he will set up siege works and appoint officers. Though the people dismiss this as false divination, their sins are remembered, and they will be seized.
- Judgment on the Prince of Israel (Verses 25–32)
G‑d addresses the wicked prince of Israel, declaring that his day of final punishment has come. The turban and crown will be removed; the high will be brought low, and the low will be exalted. The kingdom will be overturned repeatedly until the one comes who has the right to rule, and G‑d will give it to him. Then Yechezkel prophesies against Ammon: a sword is drawn for slaughter, and G‑d will pour out His fury upon them, delivering them to destruction. They will be fuel for fire, and their memory will perish.
Key Message
This chapter vividly portrays G‑d’s judgment as a sharpened sword, unstoppable and certain. It emphasizes that rebellion and covenant-breaking lead to ruin, while G‑d’s sovereignty ensures that ultimate justice and rightful rule will prevail.
