Daily Tanach – Hoshea Chapter 3: Love, Separation, and Ultimate Return
- A Prophetic Act of Love (Verses 1–3)
Hashem commands Hoshea to love a woman who is unfaithful, just as Hashem continues to love the Children of Israel despite their betrayal through idolatry.
Hoshea purchases the woman for a modest price—fifteen pieces of silver and barley—symbolizing Israel’s degraded spiritual state, yet also their continued worth in Hashem’s eyes.
Hoshea tells her that she must:
- Remain with him for many days
- Refrain from adultery
- Belong to no other man
Hoshea, in turn, commits himself to her.
- The Era of Suspension: Exile Without Sovereignty (Verse 4)
Hoshea explains the meaning of this act:
The Children of Israel will remain for many days without:
- A king or prince (political independence)
- Sacrifice (Temple service)
- Pillars (idolatry)
- Ephod or teraphim (legitimate or illegitimate means of divine inquiry)
- The Final Return and Redemption (Verse 5)
After this prolonged period, Israel will:
- Return
- Seek Hashem their God
- Seek David their king (the Messianic dynasty)
They will come with awe and trembling, recognizing Hashem’s goodness “at the end of days.”
