📚 Daf Yomi Summary – Menachot 88: Temple Measuring Vessels

Menachot 88 (88a–88b)

Temple Measuring Vessels

Menachot 88 opens Chapter 10 and addresses measuring implements used in the Temple.

  1. Why So Many Measuring Cups?

The Mishnah lists vessels of:

  • Quarter‑log
  • Half‑log
  • One log
  • One‑and‑a‑half log

These were used for:

  • Sotah water
  • Nazir loaves
  • Todah loaves
  • High Priest’s daily griddle‑cakes

  1. Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi’s Question

Why consecrate a quarter‑log vessel, if:

  • Sotah water is prepared outside the Temple
  • Nazir loaves are sanctified through slaughter

  1. Rabbi Ḥiyya’s Answer

The quarter‑log vessel was needed for:

  • The High Priest’s daily offering
  • Each loaf requires exactly a quarter‑log of oil

Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi praises Rabbi Ḥiyya with a verse:

“The man of my counsel from a distant land.”

  1. Consecration Through Measurement

Measuring vessels were not just practical tools:

  • They sanctified their contents
  • Precision itself became part of the avodah

Theme: Exact measurement is a form of holiness.
