Menachot 88 opens Chapter 10 and addresses measuring implements used in the Temple.
Â
- Why So Many Measuring Cups?
The Mishnah lists vessels of:
- Quarter‑log
- Half‑log
- One log
- One‑and‑a‑half log
These were used for:
- Sotah water
- Nazir loaves
- Todah loaves
- High Priest’s daily griddle‑cakes
Â
- Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi’s Question
Why consecrate a quarter‑log vessel, if:
- Sotah water is prepared outside the Temple
- Nazir loaves are sanctified through slaughter
Â
- Rabbi Ḥiyya’s Answer
The quarter‑log vessel was needed for:
- The High Priest’s daily offering
- Each loaf requires exactly a quarter‑log of oil
Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi praises Rabbi Ḥiyya with a verse:
“The man of my counsel from a distant land.”
Â
- Consecration Through Measurement
Measuring vessels were not just practical tools:
- They sanctified their contents
- Precision itself became part of the avodah
Theme: Exact measurement is a form of holiness.
