Rambam’s List of Commands – Part 2

 

The positive commands:

Korbanot & Kodashim

  1. Offer all korbanot only in the Beit HaBechirah.
  2. Bring all sanctified offerings from outside Israel to the Beit HaBechirah.
  3. Redeem blemished consecrated animals so they may be eaten.
  4. Declare the temurah animal holy if one attempts substitution.

 

Menachot & Kodashim Eaten by Kohanim

  1. Eat the remainder of the Minchah offerings (Kohanim).
  2. Eat the meat of the Chatat and Asham offerings (Kohanim).

 

Pesulei Kodashim

  1. Burn sacrificial meat that became impure.
  2. Burn notar (leftover sacrificial meat).

 

Nazir

  1. Let the Nazir grow his hair.
  2. Shave the Nazir upon completing his term or upon impurity.

 

Nedarim & Temurah

  1. Fulfill whatever a person expresses verbally (vows, donations, charity).
  2. Judge the annulment of vows according to the Torah’s laws.

 

Tumah & Taharah — General Impurities

  1. Render anyone who touches a neveilah impure.
  2. Recognize the impurity of the eight sheratzim.
  3. Recognize that foods receive impurity.
  4. Consider the niddah impure.
  5. Consider a woman after birth impure like a niddah.
  6. Consider the metzora impure.
  7. Consider garments with tzaraat impure.
  8. Consider a house with tzaraat impure.
  9. Consider a zav impure.
  10. Consider semen (shichvat zera) impure.
  11. Consider a zavah impure.
  12. Consider a corpse impure.
  13. Apply impurity of mei niddah to purify from corpse impurity and to impart impurity otherwise.

 

Purification

  1. Purify from impurity through immersion in a mikveh.
  2. Purify tzaraat (person/house) using cedar, hyssop, red wool, two birds, and spring water.
  3. Have the metzora shave all his hair.
  4. Publicize the metzora’s impurity through torn clothes, uncut hair, covered lips, and calling “Tamei!”

 

Parah Adumah & Valuations (Erchin)

  1. Prepare the Parah Adumah so its ashes are ready.
  2. Pay the valuation when someone pledges his “erech.”
  3. Pay the valuation of a non‑kosher animal.
  4. Pay the valuation of a consecrated house.
  5. Pay the Torah‑set valuation for a consecrated field.

 

Me’ilah

  1. Repay what was misappropriated from hekdesh and add a fifth.

 

Neta Revai & Matnot Aniyim

  1. Treat fourth‑year fruit (neta revai) as holy and redeem/eat it properly.
  2. Leave Pe’ah (corners of the field) for the poor.
  3. Leave Leket (fallen stalks) for the poor.
  4. Leave Shikhechah (forgotten sheaf) for the poor.
  5. Leave Olelot (imperfect grape clusters).
  6. Leave Peret (fallen grapes).

 

Bikkurim, Terumot & Ma’asrot

  1. Bring Bikkurim to the Beit HaBechirah.
  2. Separate Terumah Gedolah for the kohen.
  3. Separate Maaser Rishon for the Levi.
  4. Separate Maaser Sheni and eat it in Jerusalem.
  5. Have Levites give Maaser from their Maaser to the kohanim.
  6. Give Maaser Ani in years 3 and 6.
  7. Recite Viduy Maaser.
  8. Recite the declaration for Bikkurim.
  9. Separate Challah for the kohen.

 

Shemittah & Yovel

  1. Let the land rest in Shemittah.
  2. Cease agricultural labor in Shemittah.
  3. Sanctify the Yovel year.
  4. Sound the Shofar on Yovel.
  5. Provide geulah (redemption) of land in Yovel.
  6. Allow redemption of houses in walled cities for up to one year.
  7. Count Shemittah and Yovel cycles.
  8. Release debts in Shemittah.
  9. Press debts owed by a non‑Jew.

 

Matnot Kehunah

  1. Give the kohen the foreleg, cheeks, and stomach.
  2. Give Reishit HaGez (first wool).
  3. Judge cases of cherem according to Torah law.

 

Shechitah, Kashrut & Wildlife

  1. Slaughter animals before eating them.
  2. Cover the blood of birds and wild animals.
  3. Send away the mother bird.
  4. Check the signs of kosher animals.
  5. Check the signs of kosher birds.
  6. Check the signs of kosher locusts.
  7. Check the signs of kosher fish.

 

Kedushat HaZman — Sanctifying Time

  1. Sanctify the new month and calculate years through Beit Din.
  2. Rest on Shabbat.
  3. Sanctify Shabbat verbally (Kiddush).

 

Pesach & Matzot

  1. Remove chametz before Pesach.
  2. Tell the story of the Exodus on the Seder night.
  3. Eat matzah on the first night of Pesach.
  4. Rest on the first day of Pesach.
  5. Rest on the seventh day of Pesach.

 

Sefirat HaOmer & Atzeret

  1. Count the Omer for 49 days.
  2. Rest on Shavuot (day 50).

 

Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur

  1. Rest on Rosh Hashanah (1 Tishrei).
  2. Afflict yourself (fast) on Yom Kippur.
  3. Rest on Yom Kippur.

 

Sukkot

  1. Rest on the first day of Sukkot.
