Chapter 12:
1. The Value of Suffering in This World
Suffering experienced in this physical world serves as a tremendous benefit for the soul that has sinned. It acts as a means of spiritual cleansing, sparing the individual from harsher purification in the afterlife (Gehinom).
2. Limitations of Traditional Fasting
In previous generations, fasting was prescribed as a method of penance according to the teachings of the Arizal. However, in the current generation, most individuals are unable to endure such rigorous fasts, making the acceptance of suffering in this world even more valuable.
3. Comparison of Suffering: This World vs. the Next
According to the Ramban (Nachmanides), even the most intense suffering in this world (such as Job’s seventy years of affliction) is incomparable to a single moment of the soul’s suffering in Gehinom. The nature of suffering in the spiritual realm is vastly more severe than any physical pain.
4. Divine Kindness through Earthly Suffering
The principle that “this world is built upon kindness” means that even minor suffering endured here can prevent far greater punishment in the world to come. This is likened to a small movement of a shadow on earth, which represents a large shift in the heavens—demonstrating the disproportionate impact of earthly actions on spiritual realms.
5. Spiritual Impact and the Elevation of Worlds
Just as small offerings in the Temple, like a single bird or a handful of flour, could trigger profound spiritual effects, so too do mitzvot and earthly suffering uplift the soul and the upper worlds, as taught by the Zohar and the Arizal.
6. Divine Assistance in Sanctification
Quoting the sages, the text emphasizes that when a person sanctifies themselves even a little, the Divine responds by elevating them greatly. This dynamic underscores the importance of human effort and Divine reciprocation in spiritual growth.
7. The Principle of Reward and Punishment
The concept of “the reward for a mitzvah is a mitzvah” is reiterated, highlighting how each positive action brings further spiritual elevation and reward, reinforcing the cycle of sanctification and Divine assistance.
8. Wisdom and Understanding
The closing encourages the reader to apply wisdom and discern the deeper truths behind these teachings, affirming that those who reflect and seek understanding will benefit spiritually.
