🍞 Eruv Tavshilin
Preparing on Yom Tov for Shabbos
📜 The Law
❓ When is Eruv Tavshilin required?
✅ Whenever Yom Tov falls on Friday (Erev Shabbos)
📌 One must make an Eruv Tavshilin on Erev Yom Tov in order to:
• 🍳 Cook on Friday for Shabbos
• 🔥 Light Shabbos candles
• 🛠️ Prepare all Shabbos needs
⚠️ Critical Rule: Cooking Time
Even with an Eruv Tavshilin:
❗ Food must be ready before sunset on Yom Tov
❌ If there isn’t enough time for it to be edible before sunset → cooking is Biblically forbidden
📌 Many people are unaware of this important limitation
📅 When Is It Done?
🕓 Best Time:
• After daybreak on Erev Yom Tov
🟡 Allowed (if needed):
• Even from the night before
⏳ Last Chance:
• Until nightfall (Tzeis Hakochavim)
❗ If One Forgot:
🟡 Before nightfall:
✅ May still perform Eruv Tavshilin
🌗 After nightfall:
- Thursday–Friday Yom Tov:
✅ May (bedieved) make Eruv with a tnaiy (condition) - Friday–Shabbos Yom Tov:
❌ A tnaiy does NOT help
👉 Must consult a Rav
🥖 How Is It Done?
📦 The Foods Required:
• 🍞 Whole bread or matzah (size of a kibeitzah)
• 🍖 Cooked food (at least a kezayis)
✅ Preferably use an honorable food (meat or fish)
🤝 Including Others (Mizakeh):
✅ Custom: Acquire the Eruv on behalf of others in the city
🔄 How:
• Give the food to someone (non-dependent household member)
• Say:
👉 “I hereby acquire this for anyone who wishes to rely on this Eruv”
• The person lifts it one tefach
• Take it back and proceed with the bracha
⚠️ Who may be used:
• ✅ Non-family member
• ✅ Married child
• ✅ Independent child over Bar/Bas Mitzvah
• ⚠️ If no one else → wife or older child may be used
❌ Not valid:
• Dependent children under Bar/Bas Mitzvah
🙏 The Bracha
ברוך אתה ה’ אלוקינו מלך העולם אשר קדשנו במצותיו וצונו על מצות עירוב
📌 Then say (in a language you understand):
“With this Eruv it is permitted to bake, cook, insulate food, light candles, and prepare all needs from Yom Tov for Shabbos.”
🧾 Aramaic text:
בדין יהא שרא לנא לאפויי ולבשולי ולאטמוני ולאדלוקי שרגא ולתקנא ולמעבד כל צרכנא מיומא טבא לשבתא לנא ולכל ישראל הדרים בעיר הזאת
🍽️ After Making the Eruv
✅ Put the food away safely
📌 You must not eat it before finishing Shabbos preparations
🍞 Best Practice (Mitzvah Min Hamuvchar):
• Use the bread for Lechem Mishneh on Shabbos
• Some use it for:
- First meal 🍽️
- Second meal 🍽️
- Eat it at the third meal 🍽️
⚠️ If the Food Is Lost or Eaten Early:
🍖 Cooked food:
❌ Cannot continue cooking unless a kezayis remains
🍞 Bread only:
✅ Still permitted to prepare
❓ Common Questions
🥶 Can frozen food be used?
✅ Yes
🏷️ Food from a Hashgacha you don’t use?
⚖️ Preferably not, but valid if needed
👤 Can you use food you don’t own?
❌ No — it must belong to you

⚠️ Must finish cooking before sunset
🧠 Shabbos Takeaway
Eruv Tavshilin reminds us that even when preparing for Shabbos begins on Yom Tov,
📌 we do so with structure, awareness, and halachic boundaries.
✨ Preparation for Shabbos is not just practical — it’s part of honoring the Kedushah of both Yom Tov and Shabbos.
