✨ This Week’s Topic ✨
🧴 Using Oil, Gel & Cream on Shabbos
Understanding the Smearing (ממחק) & Healing (רפואה) Restrictions
📜 The Law
❓ May one smear oil or gel on the skin on Shabbos for lubrication?
🫗 Oil (Liquid)
✅ Permitted
- One may freely rub liquid oil (e.g., baby oil) on the skin • No smearing prohibition applies • 💡 Common misconception: The melacha of ממחק applies only to thick substances that require evening out — not to liquids • Examples of prohibited “thick” items: • 🕯️ Melted wax • 🧈 Lard • 🧴 Creams & ointments
🧴 Gel or Cream
❌ Rabbinically forbidden
- Gels and creams fall under the smearing prohibition • One may not: • Smear them • Dab them • Place them on the skin even without spreading
🆘 If no oil is available (for marital needs)
✔️ Solution: Mix the gel with a significant amount of water in a cup until it becomes a watery liquid, then apply. This avoids the smearing issue.
❓ May one dab a cream without smearing it?
📌 See full compilation at the end of the chapter — but here is the core rule:
🩺 When used for medical treatment (e.g., dryness)
✔️ Permitted only for: • A child under age 9 • Someone bedridden • Someone ill
❌ Not permitted for a healthy adult → Example: Vaseline may not be dabbed on dry lips
💄 May one apply Vaseline to dry lips on Shabbos?
❌ Not allowed • Even dabbing is considered healing, which is prohibited • Smearing is also a concern (ממחק)
✔️ Some Poskim allow:
Dabbing Vaseline on fresh, healthy skin for pleasure, not healing —but not smearing.
🧭 Bottom Line
- 🫗 Oil → Fully permitted • 🧴 Gel/Cream → Forbidden due to smearing • 💄 Vaseline on dry lips → Forbidden due to healing • 👶 Medical dabbing → Only for young children or the ill • 🧪 For intimacy needs → Water down gel until liquid
