The Enactments of Yochanan Kohen Gadol Cancellation of Viduy Ma’aser (Declaration over Tithes) The Mishnah states: Yochanan Kohen Gadol abolished the recitation of Viduy Ma’aser Reason: The Torah requires one to declare: “I have given the tithes properly” However: Ma’aser Rishon was being given to Kohanim instead of Levi’im Therefore

  1. The Enactments of Yochanan Kohen Gadol
  2. Cancellation of Viduy Ma’aser (Declaration over Tithes)

The Mishnah states:

  • Yochanan Kohen Gadol abolished the recitation of Viduy Ma’aser

Reason:

  • The Torah requires one to declare:

“I have given the tithes properly”

  • However:
    • Ma’aser Rishon was being given to Kohanim instead of Levi’im
    • Therefore the declaration became false

👉 Reish Lakish’s principle:

If the first part of the declaration cannot be said truthfully, the entire confession is abolished.

  1. Decree of Demai

Yochanan investigated:

  • People were careful with Terumah
  • But not fully reliable with Ma’asrot

Therefore he enacted:

  • When buying from an am ha’aretz:
    • The buyer must separate key tithes
    • Some components are kept due to ספק (uncertainty), not given away

👉 This creates a balanced halachic system:

  • Protects mitzvah observance
  • Recognizes social reality

  1. Abolishing Distorted Practices in the Temple

Two practices were eliminated:

  1. “מעוררים” – “Awakeners”
  • Levi’im who sang:

“Awaken, Hashem, why do You sleep?”

Yochanan objected:

  • This phrase implies theological error
  • Since:

“The Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps”

👉 Insight:

  • Even poetic language must reflect correct theology

  1. “נוקפים” – “Strikers”
  • Actions done to animals before slaughter (e.g., agitating or striking them)

Reason for abolition:

  • It resembled:
    • Causing blemish
    • Or idolatrous ritual behavior

👉 Principle:

Temple service must be pure both halachically and symbolically

III. Broader Theme of the Daf — Decline of Generations

The Mishnah continues listing losses:

  1. Loss of spiritual institutions
  • Urim veTumim ceased
  • Prophecy ceased after last prophets
  • רוח הקודש diminished
  1. Loss of social integrity
  • Increase in impurity → disappearance of Sotah ritual (earlier daf)
  • Increase in murder → egla arufa stopped
  1. Loss of blessing
  • Food lost taste
  • Daily life lost divine clarity

👉 “Every day contains a curse since the destruction”

  1. Aggadic Material — The Bat Kol and Hidden Greatness

A famous motif appears:

  • A bat kol announces:

There is one worthy of divine presence — but the generation is not worthy

The sages identify:

  • Figures such as Hillel (in related traditions)

👉 Key message:

Great individuals can exist — but the generation determines the level of revelation
