๐๏ธ The Spies Return from Eretz Yisrael
On this day, according to the traditional reckoning, the Meraglim (Spies) returned from their forty-day mission of scouting the Land of Israel:
โืืืฉืืื ืืชืืจ ืืืจืฅ ืืงืฅ ืืจืืขืื ืืืโ
โThey returned from scouting the land at the end of forty days.โ (Bamidbar 13:25)
Their report would lead to one of the most tragic episodes in the wilderness. Instead of encouraging the nation to enter Eretz Yisrael with faith and confidence, ten of the spies presented a discouraging report that caused the people to despair. The consequences would culminate on Tishah BโAv, when the nation wept and the decree was issued that the generation would not enter the Land.
Thus, these days mark the beginning of the final stage leading to the tragedy commemorated on Tishah BโAv.
