🕯️ The Passing of Rabbi Avraham, Dayan of Munkács

On this day passed away Rabbi Avraham ben Rabbi Shmuel Tzvi, Dayan of Munkács, זצ״ל.

Raised in the shadow of the holy Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac of Kaliv, he absorbed from his youth the traditions of Torah scholarship, piety, and Chassidic devotion that characterized Hungarian Jewry. He later served as a dayan and spiritual guide, earning the respect of rabbanim and community members alike.

In his later years he lived in ancient Tiberias, where he devoted himself to Torah study and avodas Hashem in one of Judaism’s four holy cities. His life bridged the worlds of Hungarian Chassidus and the Old Yishuv of Eretz Yisrael, and he was remembered as a figure of humility, scholarship, and sincerity.

🕯️ 1971 – The Passing of Rabbi Reuven Margolies

Among his many important works are:

  • מרגליות הים on Sanhedrin
  • נפש חיה
  • שם עולם
  • Dozens of works on Talmud, Midrash, Kabbalah, and Jewish bibliography

Rabbi Reuven Margolies possessed an encyclopedic mastery of Torah literature. His writings are renowned for uncovering connections between seemingly unrelated passages throughout Chazal, Rishonim, Midrashim, and Kabbalistic sources. He combined profound scholarship with remarkable clarity and originality.

His masterpiece, Margoliyos HaYam, printed alongside tractate Sanhedrin in many editions of the Talmud, became a classic work studied by generations of תלמידי חכמים. Through thousands of meticulously documented references and insights, he demonstrated an unparalleled familiarity with the breadth of Torah literature.

Beyond his scholarly accomplishments, Rabbi Margolies was known for his humility and his devotion to preserving the treasures of Jewish learning. Many later researchers and Torah scholars viewed him as one of the greatest bibliographic and literary authorities of modern times.

Even decades after his passing, his works remain indispensable tools in the study of Gemara, Midrash, and Jewish thought.
