๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Taanit Tzaddikim โ€“ Commemoration of the Ten Martyrs

On this day, it is brought in Seder HaYom as a fast day of tzaddikim, marking the martyrdom of several of the greatest sages of Israel, among them:

  • Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel
  • Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha, the Kohen Gadol
  • Rabbi Chanina Segan HaKohanim

These figures are counted among the Asarah Harugei Malchut (Ten Martyrs), whose tragic deaths at the hands of the Romans are commemorated in the liturgyโ€”most notably in the piyutim of:

  • โ€œEleh Ezkerahโ€ recited in Musaf of Yom Kippur
  • โ€œArzei HaLevanonโ€ recited on Tisha Bโ€™Av

Their passing represents one of the most painful and powerful episodes of mesirut nefesh in Jewish history, symbolizing the ultimate sacrifice for Torah and the sanctification of Hashemโ€™s name.

These persecutions were fueled by false accusations and widespread hatred, leading to the destruction of entire communities. In response to these tragedies, a kinah titled โ€œืืœืงื™ื ื—ื™ื™ืโ€, attributed to Rabbi Shlomo ben Rabbi Avraham of Spain, was composed, expressing the anguish and mourning over these ืงื“ื•ืฉื™ื.

This event stands as part of the long chain of persecutions in medieval Europe, where Jewish communities faced repeated libels and violence, yet remained steadfast in their faith.
