In the year ืชืงืคโ€ื— (1828), between Minchah of the 24th of Menachem Av and Maariv of the 25th, passed away the gaon Rabbi Ephraim Zalman ben Rabbi Menachem Mannish Margulies ื–ืฆืดืœ of Brody, one of the greatest poskim of Galicia.

Rabbi Ephraim Zalman was among the most prolific Torah scholars of his generation and authored a remarkable array of sefarim that became fundamental works in halachah, including:

  • ืฉื•โ€ืช ื‘ื™ืช ืืคืจื™ื
  • ื˜ื™ื‘ ื’ื™ื˜ื™ืŸ
  • ืžื˜ื” ืืคืจื™ื
  • ืฉืขืจื™ ืืคืจื™ื
  • and many other works

His influence upon practical halachah was immense. The Mateh Ephraim, dealing with the laws and customs of Elul, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkos, became one of the primary guides for Ashkenazic practice during the Yamim Noraโ€™im. Even today, many customs observed in synagogues throughout the world are based upon his rulings.

His Tiv Gittin is considered one of the foremost authorities on the laws of gittin, while Shaarei Ephraim became a classic work regarding Torah reading and synagogue procedure. His responsa Beis Ephraim continue to be cited extensively by later authorities and remain an important part of the halachic literature of the Acharonim.

As the month of Elul approaches, the yahrzeit of the Mateh Ephraim carries special significance, since his sefer continues to guide Jewish communities through the approaching Days of Awe.
