🗓️ 1912 – The Miracle of “Purim of Meknes” During the Moroccan Crisis
In the year 5672 (1912), during the turbulent period known as the Moroccan Crisis, the Jewish community of Meknes (Morocco) experienced a great salvation, which became known as the local “Purim of Meknes.”
At that time, Morocco was engulfed in instability and violence. Armed rebellious factions among the local Arab population rose up and carried out attacks that brought devastation to Jewish communities throughout the region. Some of the worst suffering occurred in major centers such as Fez and Marrakesh, where the upheaval led to destruction, fear, and great loss for the Jewish السكان (kehillos).
In Meknes, the Jewish community, foreseeing danger, attempted to defend themselves. They gathered funds and purchased weapons to protect the mellah (Jewish quarter). Despite their efforts, the Jews found themselves besieged within the mellah for approximately three months, cut off and living under constant threat. The situation was dire, as supplies were limited and fear of attack loomed constantly over the entire population.
During this prolonged siege, the community turned to tefillah and supplication, placing their trust in Hashem while at the same time doing what they could physically to defend themselves. The danger was immense, and it appeared that the fate of the community hung in the balance.
Ultimately, the turning point came when French military forces intervened. As part of their campaign during the crisis, they advanced into the region and drove away the attacking rebels, breaking the siege and restoring order. Through this unexpected intervention, the Jewish community of Meknes was spared from what could have been one of the gravest tragedies in its history.
In recognition of this great נס, the community established a local יום טוב—a “Purim” of thanksgiving, commemorating their rescue. On this day, they would recall the פחד and the ישועה, expressing gratitude to Hashem who delivered them from destruction.
The story of Purim Meknes stands as a powerful reminder of the vulnerability and resilience of Jewish communities in times of upheaval, and of the enduring faith that sustained them—even in the face of prolonged danger and uncertainty.
