🕯️ 1834 – The Deliverance of Tzfat from the Arab “Fellah” Riots
In the year 5594 (1834), the Jewish community of Tzfat was saved from the murderous riots of the Arab peasants (fellaḥim) who had violently attacked the city.
This קשה and dangerous episode was part of a broader wave of unrest in the Land of Israel, during which the Jews of Tzfat suffered greatly. However, on this day came a turning point of salvation, and the community was spared further destruction.
In gratitude, it was instituted that a Seudat Hoda’ah (meal of thanksgiving) be held annually from the communal funds (Kupat HaChevra Kadisha). This enactment is recorded in the community register of Tzfat and is associated with the influence of the tzaddik Rabbi Avraham Dov of Avritch, the author of Bat Ayin, who had settled in Tzfat and strengthened its spiritual life.
The practice was also mentioned by later rabbanim, and the day was marked as one of thanksgiving rather than supplication, with some communities omitting Tachanun in recognition of the salvation.
This event stands as one of the many local “Purim”-type salvations in Eretz Yisrael, reflecting the resilience of the Jewish community in the Holy Land and their constant reliance on Divine mercy even in times of danger.
