Chapter 4
1. Purpose of Repentance and Its Levels
Repentance (teshuvah) is essential for spiritual atonement and cleansing of the soul before the Divine.
After proper repentance, sacrificial offerings serve as a gift, as described in the Talmud.
2. Understanding True Repentance
The main aspect of repentance is to return to the Divine sincerely and wholeheartedly.
The Zohar explains the deeper meaning of “teshuvah,” differentiating between the lower (tata’ah) and higher (ila’ah) levels.
3. Repentance for Severe Transgressions
Some sources state that standard repentance is ineffective for certain transgressions, like wasting seed, but this is clarified as referring only to the lower level of repentance; higher repentance is still effective.
4. Divine Punishments and Lifespan
Scripture and rabbinic tradition describe that those liable for kares (spiritual excision) or ‘death by Heaven’ would die before age 50 or 60, respectively.
However, history shows many such individuals lived long, pleasant lives.
