This letter is one of the most practical and powerful in Iggeret HaKodesh.

After discussing suffering, faith, prayer, and self-nullification, the Alter Rebbe now turns to the foundation of communal spiritual life:

Ahavas Yisrael and true humility.

He argues that without genuine love between Jews, the heart cannot properly serve Hashem.

  1. Stop Looking for Complex Calculations

The Alter Rebbe pleads with his chassidim:

Do not throw my words behind your backs.

A person should live simply and honestly:

โ€œื”ืืœืงื™ื ืขืฉื” ืืช ื”ืื“ื ื™ืฉืจโ€œ

โ€œHashem made man upright.โ€

Instead of seeking endless:

  • Calculations
  • Suspicions
  • Strategies
  • Hidden motives

a Jew should live with sincerity and integrity.

  1. Leave Hidden Calculations to Hashem

The Alter Rebbe says:

Do not search for

All the hidden reasons behind events, peopleโ€™s behavior, and Divine providence belong to:

Heavenโ€™s work, not manโ€™s work.

A person should focus on his own avodah rather than constantly analyzing others.

  1. Be Humble Before Every Person

He then quotes the Mishnah:

โ€œื•ื”ื•ื™ ืฉืคืœ ืจื•ื— ื‘ืคื ื™ ื›ืœ ืื“ืโ€œ

โ€œBe humble before every person.โ€

This is not mere politeness.

The Alter Rebbe explains:

Every Jew possesses something that another Jew lacks.

Therefore:

Every person can learn from every other person.

  1. Every Jew Completes Another Jew

He cites the idea:

โ€œื›ืœ ื™ืฉืจืืœ ื›ืื™ืฉ ืื—ื“ ื—ื‘ืจื™ืโ€œ

All Jews are like one person.

Just as a human body consists of many organs,

so too the Jewish people form one spiritual organism.

  1. The Heart Needs Every Limb

The Alter Rebbe develops the analogy.

When one limb is separated,

the entire body suffers.

Most importantly:

The heart is affected.

Because:

Life emerges from the heart.

Likewise, division among Jews weakens the collective spiritual heart.

  1. Serving Hashem Requires Unity

This leads to a powerful conclusion.

True Divine service requires:

Unity among Jews.

This is the meaning of:

โ€œื•ืœืขื‘ื“ื• ืฉื›ื ืื—ื“โ€œ

โ€œTo serve Him with one shoulder.โ€

Hashemโ€™s service must be performed together.

The heart of the nation cannot function properly while filled with division.

  1. Plant Love of Another Jew in Your Heart

The Alter Rebbe therefore pleads:

Work with all your heart and soul to establish love for your fellow Jew.

Not merely polite behavior.

Not merely tolerance.

But genuine inner love.

  1. Donโ€™t Even Think Negatively About Another Jew

The verse states:

โ€œDo not think evil about one another in your hearts.โ€

The Alter Rebbe emphasizes:

The problem begins already in thought.

  1. Expel Negative Thoughts Immediately

If a negative thought enters the mind:

Push it away immediately.

How quickly?

The Alter Rebbe says:

Like driving away smoke.

Do not nurture it.

Do not develop it.

Do not analyze it.

Remove it immediately.

  1. Like a Thought of Idolatry

The Alter Rebbe uses extraordinarily strong language.

A negative thought about another Jew should be rejected like:

A thought of idolatry.

Why such extreme language?

Because the damage caused by hatred begins in the hidden inner world long before it reaches speech.

  1. Lashon Hara Begins in Thought

Chazal teach:

Lashon hara is equivalent to the gravest sins.

The Alter Rebbe argues:

If spoken lashon hara is so severe,

then the thoughts that eventually produce such speech must be treated seriously from the beginning.

  1. Thought Is More Powerful Than Speech

He concludes with a principle already familiar from Tanya:

Thought is even more deeply connected to the soul than speech.

Therefore:

  • Good thoughts are extremely powerful.
  • Negative thoughts are equally significant.

The battle for Ahavas Yisrael begins inside the mind and heart.

The Central Point of the Letter

The Alter Rebbeโ€™s message can be summarized in one sentence:

True avodas Hashem requires genuine unity, humility, and love for every Jew.

A Jew should:

  • Stop obsessing over othersโ€™ faults.
  • Recognize that every person possesses unique value.
  • Reject negative thoughts immediately.
  • Cultivate sincere love and respect for fellow Jews.

Only then can the Jewish people become:

โ€œื›ืื™ืฉ ืื—ื“โ€œ

One person with one heart.

Key Takeaway

The Alter Rebbe teaches that the foundation of spiritual life is Ahavas Yisrael. Every Jew contributes something unique to the collective body of Israel, and therefore every person deserves humility, respect, and love. Negative thoughts about others must be expelled immediately, long before they become speech or action. When Jews unite as โ€œone person,โ€ they can truly fulfill the verse: โ€œื•ืœืขื‘ื“ื• ืฉื›ื ืื—ื“โ€œ, serving Hashem together with a complete heart.
