The Chassidic Meaning Behind Seeing the Stars Through the Sukkah[1]

The Sukkah represents the drawing down of an encompassing Divine light (Or Makif) that surrounds and embraces the Jew dwelling within it. However, the ultimate purpose of this lofty revelation is not merely to remain above and beyond the person, but to eventually become internalized within him.

This concept is reflected in the halachic requirement that the stars be visible through the Sechach. The stars symbolize a faint glimmer and revelation of the encompassing light. Although the Or Makif itself transcends the person and cannot be fully grasped, a measured radiance of this light shines through, allowing it to become accessible and ultimately absorbed on an inner level.

Thus, the visibility of the stars through the Sukkah teaches that even the highest transcendent revelations are intended to illuminate and transform the individual from within.
