📚 Daf Yomi Summary –Chullin 27: Start of Perek “השוחט” — Rules of Shechitah

This daf marks a major transition:

Finished abstract categories (23–26)

Now begins practical hilchot shechitah (slaughter)

 

I. Opening Mishna — Core Law of Shechitah

Animal	Requirement
בהמה (animal)	2 סימנים

סימנים = קנה (trachea) + ושט (esophagus)

Cutting רוב (majority) = like the whole

The Gemara opens with a big discussion:

Why does the Mishna say “השוחט” (past tense)?

bedi’eved (after the fact) → valid

lechatchila (ideal) → maybe more is required

 

Two explanations:

Refers to birds:

Ideally → cut more (maybe both simanim)

Bedi’eved → 1 siman is enough

Refers to “רובו ככולו”:

Ideally → cut entire siman

Bedi’eved → majority is enough
